While there is no evidence that Tina Turner was "addicted to action and entertainment," her life and career were marked by a tenacious determination to perform and overcome adversity. Her powerful, high-energy stage presence, which defined her as an artist, was a defining characteristic that began early in her career and continued throughout her decades-long performances.
Tina Turner's extraordinary drive can be understood through the challenges she faced and overcame:
Escape from abuse: The "action" in Turner's life was centered on surviving a long and violent marriage to her first husband and musical partner, Ike Turner. After a severe domestic dispute in 1976, she fled with only a few cents and a gas card and filed for divorce. She gave up all monetary assets to keep her stage name.
The need to rebuild her career: When she left Ike, Turner was deeply in debt from canceled tour dates and other legal challenges. She was forced to take any paying gig she could get, including cabaret shows in Las Vegas, to rebuild her life and career.
