Tina and Ike Turner’s partnership produced 1960s–early-’70s hits but was marked by abuse Tina later detailed in memoirs and interviews. On July 1, 1976, en route to a show in Dallas, a fight erupted; she escaped, bruised, to a nearby hotel and was given a room by staff. She filed for divorce on July 27, citing irreconcilable differences, and in the settlement kept few assets but retained the professional name “Tina Turner.” Through club dates and TV variety bookings she rebuilt, then signed with Capitol; 1984’s Private Dancer sold millions and won multiple Grammys. The escape night—pennies in pocket, freeway in sandals—became the hinge between survival and one of pop’s great second acts.
