The story behind the massive final chord on The Beatles’ "A Day in the Life." The band wanted a monumental way to end the song. They decided to hit an E-major piano chord and let it ring out, but a piano naturally fades to silence after about 10 seconds.

So what they did is John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Mal Evans sat at three separate grand pianos and hit the chord simultaneously. As the natural volume began to fade, engineer Geoff Emerick pushed the volume faders on the mixing desk higher and higher.

This captured the atmosphere of the room, resulting in a legendary 40-second piano chord. Today, that exact physical workflow technique is known as volume automation—a standard feature used in every modern digital audio workstation.
