Paul McCartney woke up with a fully formed melody in his head… and didn’t trust it.
For months, he walked around with the tune we now know as “Yesterday,” but he called it “Scrambled Eggs” and sang it with joke lyrics like:
“Scrambled eggs, oh my baby, how I love your legs…”
He was terrified he’d accidentally stolen it, so he played it for the Beatles, producer George Martin, publishers – anyone who might recognize it. No one did.
Only after that did he let himself believe the song was truly his. On a trip to Portugal, the real words finally arrived:
“Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away…”
That little dream melody – once a breakfast joke – became the most covered song in pop music history.
