On 28 August 1964, The Beatles met Bob Dylan in a New York hotel room — and music history changed. This is the true story of the night Bob Dylan introduced The Beatles to marijuana at the Delmonico Hotel. No cameras. No press. Just one private meeting that would influence the future of rock music. At the height of Beatlemania, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were already the biggest band in the world. But this night marked a shift.
From the famous Ringo Starr joint story to Paul McCartney’s “seven levels” moment, and the deeper influence Dylan had on Beatles songwriting, this meeting became one of the most important turning points in 1960s music history.
Shortly after, The Beatles became more introspective. Bob Dylan went electric. And rock music evolved. By the summer of 1964, The Beatles were no longer simply a band from Liverpool. They had become a global phenomenon moving at a speed even they could barely understand.
Only seven months earlier they had landed at Kennedy Airport to the sound of screaming teenagers and flashbulbs popping like artillery. In February they had conquered American television on The Ed Sullivan Show. Now they were back in the United States for a major tour, moving from city to city in a blur of stadiums, hotel rooms, press conferences and chaos.
To the public they appeared unstoppable. Four cheeky young men with matching haircuts and endless energy. The songs were bright, melodic and deceptively simple. “She Loves You.” “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” “A Hard Day’s Night.” The Beatles seemed to represent a kind of joyful innocence. Even when their music hinted at longing or heartbreak, the overall tone remained upbeat. They were the sound of youth discovering itself.
But privately, the pace of their lives was beginning to grind them down. Every day followed the same exhausting pattern. They were woken early by managers or assistants, rushed into interviews with local radio stations, photographed by newspapers, pushed into limousines and driven to sound checks, then placed on stage in front of crowds so loud they could barely hear themselves play. After the concerts came more interviews, more travelling, more hotel rooms that looked almost exactly the same.
By late August, they had arrived in New York again for another appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and a run of concerts around the country. Their base of operations was the Delmonico Hotel on Park Avenue. It was a grand old building that had once hosted presidents and diplomats, but in 1964 it was temporarily occupied by the loudest cultural earthquake on the planet.
