The McCartneys’ final trip to Arizona was not a frantic escape from a hospital, but a deliberate return to the place where Linda felt most free. She had fallen in love with Tucson in the 1960s while studying at the University of Arizona, and the ranch they bought in 1979 became her sanctuary. In early April 1998, as her cancer spread to her liver, Linda and Paul flew to Tucson to try alternative therapies and to spend quiet time together at their ranch.
Surrounded by her family, she spent her final days among the saguaro cacti and the desert sun she adored. Despite her failing health, she even rode her favorite Appaloosa stallion, Blanket, just two days before she died, with Paul helping her into the saddle using a hay bale. In the early hours of April 17, 1998, at their ranch near Tucson, Paul did not speak to her about hospitals or medicine. Instead, he whispered a vivid story of riding together through spring woods under a clear blue sky.
The family initially told the press she had died elsewhere to protect their privacy, but Paul later said how important that place was to him because it was where Linda chose to be at the end. He did not just lose his wife there. He honored her last wish. He still owns the ranch today, and their son James has said the desert still feels like home because of how much Linda loved it.
