This is the eighth remix I have completed for Michael Jackson's landmark LP "Off The Wall". After this only two songs remain to complete the collection . "It's The Falling In Love" and "Burn This Disco Out".
Paul McCartney wrote the song for Michael Jackson but he recorded the song for his 1978 LP, "London Town" but did not release it as a single in the US. So when Quincy Jones brought him some musical suggestions, "Girlfriend" was included but Quincy did not know about McCartney's intention to give it to Michael anyway.
Michael recorded the song as he was a fan of the Beatles and jumped at the chance to record a McCartney original.
As you know, that brought more collaborations with the ex Beatle for his juggernaut album, "Thriller" for "The Girl Is Mine" and then the #1 pop hit duet "Say Say Say". Eventually the pair had a falling out when Jackson bought out the Beatles back catalog in 1985. McCartney told Jackson during their honeymoon period that owning any music catalog publishing rights could be very lucrative.
Jackson even teased McCartney about owning the Beatles catalog, which Paul did not take seriously until Jackson bought the rights out from under McCartney and the action broke up the friendship. The bidding war brought the cost of the catalog to 47.5 million dollars. Jackson continued to pour salt on the wound by allowing the Beatles songs to be used for TV commercials which McCartney condemned as the Beatles purposefully avoided the situation as it would spoil the reputation of their music.
Jackson laughed all the way to the bank when he sold his a 50% stake in the catalog for 95 million dollars, twice the amount of the original sale and he still maintained a 50% stake of the Beatles music.
