In 1981, weeks after John Lennon's murder, Carl Perkins stayed with Paul and Linda McCartney in Montserrat. The night before leaving, Carl spontaneously wrote "My Old Friend" as a thank-you gift. The next morning, when Carl sang the line "think about me now and then old friend," Paul stood up and left the room in tears. Linda hugged Carl, thanking him—Paul hadn't been able to grieve yet. Paul later revealed: those were John's exact last words to him.
