Songs: In New Orleans (House Of The Rising Sun) - Goodnight, Irene – Black Betty
Lead Belly (born Huddie William Ledbetter) was one of the most influential American folk and blues musicians of the 20th century — a powerhouse singer, a master of the 12 string guitar, and a walking encyclopedia of traditional songs.
He was active in the early 90’s and known for: his booming, unmistakable voice, his virtuosity on the 12 string guitar and his role in preserving and popularizing American folk standards like Goodnight, Irene, Black Betty, Midnight Special and In the Pines (Where Did You Sleep Last Night?).
He was born: 1888 or 1889, in Mooringsport, Louisiana and died in 1949, in New York City.
Lead Belly spent parts of his life working on farms, performing in the South, and — famously — serving time in prison, where folklorists John and Alan Lomax discovered him and helped bring his music to a wider audience.
Lead Belly’s influence is enormous. His songs were later covered by artists like Nirvana, Johnny Cash, The Beach Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Janis Joplin.
His work shaped the American folk revival and continues to echo through modern music.
