Remembering Elvis Presley’s mother Gladys Presley
on the anniversary of her passing 67 years ago.
August 14, 1958.
Gladys Love Smith born on April 25, 1912,
in Pontotoc County, Mississippi.
She was one of nine children.
She married Vernon Elvis Presley on June 17, 1933.
On January 8, 1935 she gave birth to twin boys, Elvis and Jesse. Jesse was stillborn.
Gladys couldn't have any more children,
so she was fiercely protective of her only son Elvis.
And had a very special relationship.
Elvis' childhood friends have recalled that Gladys was a sweet mama bear,
and always making sure they all stayed safe and didn't get into trouble.
On August 14, 1958,
At approximately 3.15 AM
with her husband at her side Gladys dies.
She died of a heart attack brought on by acute hepatitis.
She was 46.
Both Elvis and Vernon are inconsolable.
