Girl Happy is a 1965 American musical romantic comedy and beach party film, the 18th film starring Elvis Presley. The film won the fourth Laurel Award for Top Musical of 1965. The theme song, "Puppet on a String," reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 3 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and number 3 in Canada, and was certified gold by the RIAA. MGM promoted Girl Happy as a beach party film ("Elvis brings the beat to the beach!" and "Elvis jumps with the campus crowd to bounce beach 'balls'!"), but Elvis never appeared shirtless again during his professional career, although he had appeared shirtless in previous films. In Girl Happy, Elvis wears a long-sleeved shirt for most scenes, even while waterskiing. Filming began on June 22, 1964, and finished in late July. Despite the film being set in Fort Lauderdale, Presley did not film any scenes in the city. Principal photography took place at MGM Studios, with beach scenes shot in Southern California. Only second-unit filming took place in Fort Lauderdale.
Considered titles included The Only Way to Love and Girl Crazy. Joe Pasternak had produced Where the Boys Are, a 1960 spring break film also set in Fort Lauderdale. This film has been described as the "most beach party-esque" film of Elvis's career.
Shelley Fabares, Mary Ann Mobley, and Chris Noel had appeared in beach party films prior to Girl Happy. Fabares had appeared in Ride the Wild Surf, and Mobley and Noel both appeared in Get Yourself a College Girl. Shelley Fabares sings a duet with Elvis Presley on "Spring Fever," and Nita Talbot sings "Read All About It." This is the first of three films in which Fabares appeared with Elvis Presley.

Soundtrack
Girl Happy is the tenth soundtrack album by American singer and musician Elvis Presley, released in March 1965 in mono and stereo by RCA Victor Records for the 1965 film of the same name starring Presley. Recording sessions took place on June 10, 11, and 12 at Radio Recorders in Hollywood, California, with vocal overdubs by Presley on June 15, 1964. The album peaked at number 8 on the Top LPs chart. It was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on July 15, 1999.
