Double Trouble is a 1967 American musical film starring Elvis Presley. It tells the story of an American singer's encounters with criminals in Europe. It ranked 58th in the box office rankings for 1967. Released on April 5, 1967, it was Presley's 24th film, though it was actually shot two weeks earlier, prior to his 23rd film, Easy Come, Easy Go, which was released on March 22, 1967. It was the first film produced by Irwin Winkler, the manager who impressed MGM president Robert O'Brien during the production of Doctor Zhivago (1965). O'Brien approached Winkler about producing a film at MGM, and the studio's head of story department, Russell Thatcher, offered the script to Julie Christie, who had starred in Doctor Zhivago, as a perfect fit. Winkler agreed and took the project to O'Brien, who said he wanted to make the film but wanted Elvis Presley, not Christie, in the lead role. The script had to be rewritten to accommodate Presley's availability. Although the film was set in Europe, all of the action was shot on the MGM backlot in Culver City.
Winkler later wrote that his first "Hollywood foray" involved "a famous male rock singer playing a dramatic role written for a woman, with a controlling, antagonistic manager, a story set in Europe, filmed in Culver City, California, and a very kind director who told me he was going blind because he could barely walk up the stairs to meet me." Another producer, Judd Bernard, neglected to mention that Elvis's role in "Double Trouble" was supposedly written for a woman.
Elvis was paid $750,000 plus 40% of the profits.
Famous character actor Michael Murphy made his big-screen feature film debut as Maury. Howard Thompson of The New York Times called the film "decent, and far superior to Elvis's three previous flops," adding, "The studio-shot action scenes, while mostly highly comical, are remarkably well-integrated with the authentic backdrops. At least the images move. Plus, the classic songs flow one after the other, and some numbers are festive and charming." Variety called the film "seemingly made to showcase a big name without much thought for its content, other than using his star power as a money-making image." However, the same reviewer noted that Presley "presents himself fairly evenly, given the circumstances, and the powerful influence he wields over the public will likely enhance his reputation." Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times praised the film's "likable" cast and budget, superior to other Elvis films, noting, "The cast never leaves Culver City, but you'd never know it, thanks to the quaint Belgian streets and other European landscapes expertly recreated on the backlot." The Monthly Film Bulletin said, "Attempting to offer Elvis some slightly different material (while still delivering the usual plethora of songs, of course), this comedy-thriller falls flat despite its accessible approach."
