One of the songs that came from Elvis' years in the military. While stationed in Germany, he heard the traditional 19th-century Italian song "O Sole Mio" (Oh My Sun). Elvis recorded it a few months later on April 3, 1960, with lyrics written in under 20 minutes by Aaron Schroeder. In addition to being a success in the States, it went to number one in Britain in November 1960, three months after the US number one, and stayed there for eight weeks, the longest of any Elvis single.

Such a song was quite atypical for Elvis at the time, up to that point he had done mainly rock and roll and rockabilly songs. It marked the beginning of a new era for Elvis, where he sang more traditional and pop songs. His next single "Are You Lonesome Tonight" written in 1926 was a great success with both young and older audiences.

The amazing stereo soundstage can be credited to sound engineer Bill Porter, who was working for RCA Victor at the time. Most notably, he is responsible for the sound of Roy Orbison and The Everly Brothers hits. He also worked on other "living stereo" sounding tracks such as "The End of the World" with Skeeter Davis, Hank Locklin's "Please Help Me, I'm Falling", Bob Luman's crossover hit "Let's Think About Living"; Tommy Roe's "Sheila", Sue Thompson's "Sad Movies", Ronnie and the Daytonas' "Little GTO", and "Poetry in Motion" by Johnny Tillotson.

LYRICS:
It's now or never
Come hold me tight
Kiss me my darling
Be mine tonight
Tomorrow will be too late
It's now or never
My love won't wait

When I first saw you
With your smile so tender
My heart was captured
My soul surrendered
I'd spend a lifetime
Waiting for the right time
Now that you're near
The time is here at last

It's now or never
Come hold me tight
Kiss me my darling
Be mine tonight
Tomorrow will be too late
It's now or never
My love won't wait

Just like a willow
We would cry an ocean
If we lost true love
And sweet devotion
Your lips excite me
Let your arms invite me
For who knows when
We'll meet again this way

It's now or never
Come hold me tight
Kiss me my darling
Be mine tonight
Tomorrow will be too late
It's now or never
My love won't wait

It's now or never
My love won't wait

It's now or never
My love won't wait

It's now or never
My love won't wait
