When the Presley family moved from Tupelo to Memphis in November 1948, Elvis was just 13 years old. They lived in boarding houses before settling into Lauderdale Courts, a public housing complex where Elvis spent some of his most formative years. It was here that he carried the gift that started it all — the guitar his mother, Gladys, bought him at Tupelo Hardware in 1945 for $7.90. Too shy to sing for classmates, Elvis practiced quietly in his room, strumming gospel melodies he learned at the First Assembly of God Church and absorbing the blues he heard drifting from Beale Street.

At Humes High School, he stood out for his long sideburns, flashy Lansky Brothers clothing, and deep love for gospel quartets at the Ellis Auditorium. Though still quiet and introverted, he was beginning to find a style and identity entirely his own. By the time he graduated in 1953, Elvis had gone from a shy boy with a cheap guitar to a young man shaped by the sounds of Memphis — gospel, blues, country, and the raw energy of Beale Street. The foundation for his future was already set.
