When Paul McCartney heard Phil Spector’s orchestral mix of “The Long and Winding Road,” he exploded. In April 1970 he fired off a furious letter to Apple and Allen Klein demanding the strings, choir and harp be stripped back, calling the overproduced version “not us anymore.” Weeks later, that same recording became The Beatles’ 20th and final US number‑one single, turning the song that broke them into their last great chart triumph.
